Word from Branch Chairman

Eng. Michael Kamau
BRANCH CHAIRMAN

Fellow Engineers, Africa is the second largest and the second most populous continent with well above 1.3 billion people. Our continent boasts of the youngest population with a median age of 19.4 years against a global median age of 30.4 years. Closer home, Kenya’s median age is 20 years. A majority of Kenya’s population is young. This can be a good thing in terms of available workforce or a disaster in waiting as our government grapples with widespread unemployment and accompanying ills that dog idle youth.

Our generation stands at a great crossroad in history, as trained professions of our era it is no longer enough to only create jobs for ourselves, we have to go a step further and mind those who look up to us. We can no longer afford to just sit and complain about how things are not being done right. Engineers must have collective responsibility for the development of our nation. Engineers have to be vocal, take up leadership roles and actively participate in policy making.
The IEK South Rift Branch has a youthful following, with the branch council committed to provide a forum for Engineers to debate and address issues affecting them.  Our branch council is a pace setters council with the main runners being our members. I look forward to your active participation on our platforms across the discipline chapter. On a monthly basis, members will debate on a topic which affects the Engineering fraternity. A summary of feedback and members input will be shared on this page.

I welcome you to participate and make constructive contribution to the pool of ideas. Feel free to give us feedback.
